How to Communicate Like a Boss
How to Communicate Like a BossHow to Communicate Like a BossHow to Communicate Like a BossCommunicate like a boss and maybe one day youll become one. Heres how. TWEETToday, everybody has a million different method of workdistributions-mix communication. Thanks to smartphones, social media and the workshifting culture, instant communication is easier and mora varied than ever. At the same time, our limited attention spans make us more distracted and distant from each other. With a lack of clear boundaries between in and out-of-office communication, confusion is common. In this context, Id like to share a handful of workplace communication principles I think are most important. These cover both tried-and-true areas (like active listening) as well as 21st-century ones (like email etiquette and when to use cloud-based messaging apps).Active listening in the workplaceLets start with old-fashioned conversation. One of the great misunderstood conversational tactics is active listening in the workplace. Contrary to popular belief, active listening is not merely the act of passively not speaking while someone else is speaking, but it is listening so carefully that you can jump in when necessary to help the other person complete a thought or move the conversation forward. Practice active listening, and you will have a greater impact in your daily interactions. Avoid the false choices of not listening at all or keeping your mouth shut the entire time.Email and instant-message etiquetteLets move to email. Consider one of the great workplace communication rules of Marsha Egan, a workplace productivity coach If its an emergency, dont email. She says in urgent situations you should pick up the phone or walk to the other persons work station. In fact, anything that requires a response in under 3 hours should not involve email because it reinforces the toxic idea that email is an appropriate emergency response system. Common sense, right?Another rule is dont automatically hit re ply-all. Be more sparing in your use of it and be judicious with c.c.s by asking yourself whether a eignung recipient really needs to see the message before hitting send. This prevents exponential wastes of time on the parte of people reading unnecessary messages and recovering from interruptions to read these messages.Another great thing to remember about email and workplace communication is that its not a substitute for conversation. It is designed to send files and other communications, not have a dialog. If you need to have an actual conversation with somebody, you should get in front of their face, pick up the phone (if time/distance are an issue), or use a real-time messaging app like Slack or Salesforce Chatter. Real-time messages are less likely to be overlooked because unlike email, they do not compete with the outside world of customers/clients, partners and spammers for your attention. Its simple. Finally, with email, you want to be checking it periodically on your own tim e, not like a mouse pushing a lever for a food pellet (or a junkie perpetually looking for the next fix). Schedule your email checking time and dont waver from it, lest you fall into a deep email vacuum where all productivity ceases.Ill leave the subject of email with a question from another productivity guru I once read Is answering emails the highest and best use of your time? Put another way, do you want to be known for being good at reading emails, or the actual thing you were hired for? If the answer is the latter, you should keep email at arms length. Theres a place for it, but you generally have so many better things you can be doing with your time that constant interruptions dont serve. Dont fall into the trap of compulsive checking. The power of face timeAt the risk of stating the obvious, there is totenstill no substitute for face-to-face conversation. The reason I call attention to one-on-one dialog is because in todays always-on virtual communication buffet, we have 1,000 different ways NOT to talk to somebody face-to-face. Skype and videoconferencing tools are your best friends when traditional physical meetings are impractical.Skeptical of whether meeting face-to-face still matters? Of all the new trends in higher-education marketing Chris M. Kormis (CMO, Georgetown Universitys McDonough School of Business) could have listed in a recent interview, she actually named the in-person visit as among the most powerful. Yes, the message is obvious Time spent in person with someone else is still crucial. By being able to exchange information personally, read body language, listen carefully to intonation and see other nonverbal cues, you get a fuller picture than any electronic media could offer. Taking it back to workplace communication, when you need to explore a complex subject with somebody, interact in a more sophisticated way or otherwise get deep, start talking more face-to-face.Organizational workplace communicationConsider the communication style of your organization. Is it largely open and transparent? Does it employ 360-degree reviews of people for comprehensive peer feedback across organizational levels? Is two-way dialog encouraged? Are employees given sufficient information about the direction and priorities of the business? If not, you want to be living by example and agitating for this change or joining the company whose culture already embodies it.Sometimes effective organizational communication entails addressing a darker side. New research from Harvard Business School shows companies can save serious money by avoiding the wrong hires and cutting bad actors. Indeed, contrary to conventional wisdom, just hiring superstars is actually 50% less valuable than removing bad actors in the workplace. When a company recognizes cultural fit as a top priority and regulates accordingly, you want to make sure you fit that culture before you start and determine behavioral expectations for what people at Company X do or dont do. Then, once youre integrated into the organization, raise concerns about any violations of company culture you see. Ask questions about values that need clarification as applied to daily work life. You can avoid potential damage to your reputation as a good corporate citizen by actively addressing any questions about your relative influence on intra-office harmony. This kind of personal diplomacy and intimate understanding of a companys cultural values can go a long way toward finding and keeping your dream job.Fighting workplace bulliesSpeaking of removing the cancers, watch out for workplace bullies all 3 kinds of them, as outlined in an insightful Graziadio Business Review article. Bullying represents a destructive behavior that is an innovation- and competiveness-killer. Id also recommend reading The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene to help identify clear patterns in how people use (and abuse) power. The lessons imparted in this book can help you defend yourself against those w ho would use their status to harm you, your colleagues, or ultimately, the organization.Emotional I.Q. (E.Q.)As management thinkers are starting to point out, another underrated element of both business and general communication is emotional intelligence. In addition to keeping your feelings in check under pressure, the so-called soft skills like listening, massaging egos and managing conflict are traditionally undervalued in corporate environments, but in todays knowledge economy are prized. Why? Because in order to successfully collaborate, you need to be able to read people. You need political skills. You need to know when to push and when to hold back. You need to be able to verstndigung im strafverfahren effectively with the inevitable stress that accompanies any job. Understanding the volatility of peoples emotions (including your own) and being sensitive to interpersonal dynamics goes a long way toward maintaining composure and leading with a steady hand. The best leaders are not necessarily the most visible or vocal in fact, quiet leadership and background support is now recognized as an integral component of a high-functioning modern workplace. And some people just prefer to assist behind-the-scenes without putting their name in lights. These people are usually experts in active listening in the workplace and other workplace communication methods. Executive management may now have greater appreciation for the work of these silent contributors, thanks to the higher profile of E.Q.Moral of the story If you communicate like a boss, then theres a good chance youll end up being one. And a good one at thatNeed help with your resume? Our TopResume writers can help

How to Build the Best Creative Team
How to Build the Best Creative TeamHow to Build the Best Creative TeamAttention employers Building a great creative gruppe doesnt have to be a challenge. Knowing that the process is part art, part science will keep you on track.I recently spoke at the HOW Design Live Conference about top trends impacting creative gruppes, including accelerating technological advancements and an increasingly competitive landscape for recruiting and retaining highly skilled employees. (If youre interested, you can view the slides from my presentation on SlideShare.)A hot topic was how employers can assemble a standout creative team in the face of talent shortages. Heres my five-point prescription.1. The right peopleIn buchung to build the best creative team, you need the best people (and the right number of them). A few ways to assess if you have the right people is by evaluating technical skills, collaboration abilities, productivity and team size.Skills. With any team, you need to begin with intellec tual assets. This is the science part of building a creative team. Your job is to ensure the individuals on your team have the right technical skills and expertise (like software knowledge) as well as a sufficient level of experience.Workplace fit. Can you define what makes a good match for your team and organization? This is the art of building a creative team. After all, theres a job description and theres the right fit. The right fit needs more than the rote skills to execute the tasks associated with the job the team member must also have the personality, soft skills and work style to fit in with the workplace culture.Team size. Integral to creative team building success is making sure you have the right staffing level. Do you have the flexibility to seamlessly staff up or down during slowdowns and busy seasons? Being able to add key skills as needed to handle elevated work periods keeps teams running smoothly.2. The right processHaving the best creative team means team members are not just passionate and creative, but also productive and efficient. And to be productive and efficient, you need clearly defined expectations. Effective teams have a leader who sets tangible targets, such as deadlines and production schedules, in order to achieve team goals and expectations, with checks and balances along the way. Creative teams can be brilliant, but you cant overlook the need for defined process, direction and focus to keep that brilliance on target.3. The right leadership (and leadership approach) Without a doubt, your creative team leader must have the technical expertise to communicate with the team, but thats not what will make him or her an effective leader. The best leaders need to identify and communicate a vision and inspire others to create. They must also be humble, approachable and decisive. A strong team leader should know when to be open to the teams thoughts and when to stand firm and make a decision. In general, creative team leaders should focu s onHaving open communication between team members and management. While there should be rules of engagement, it should also be understood that there are no dumb questions.Using team-based approaches to solving problems. Dont just tell ask how others would handle problems or setbacks.Fostering a safe-to-fail and safe-to-risk environment. Creativity cant thrive if risk and failure arent options.4. The right environmentCreative teams need creative workspaces. Inspiration can be hard to come by when teams are divided, isolated or restricted. Find opportunities in your teams physical environment to inspire creativity. That may mean using a conference room as a collaborative work environment, or structuring desks like a bullpen, with all team members working in open space. The right environment might also mean access to proprietary tools and software, even when team members are away from the office. Flexibility to work from home and access information whenever creativity strikes even in the middle of the night means your creative team can be effective and productive anytime, anywhere.5. The right vision Its integral that your creative team understands the bigger purpose of the project, department and company. Whats the mission of each? How does each of those individual missions come together to serve one greater goal? For example, if you are building a website, every team member, from the UX designer to the copywriter to the web developer, needs to be unified on mission, goal and purpose, not just for their roles, but for the final deliverable. This is the core of an effective creative team understanding not just your individual contributions but how those fit into the greater picture.Diane Domeyer is executive director of The Creative Group. The drop in unemployment and what it means for you
The drop in unemployment and what it means for you The drop in unemployment and what it means for youPosted October 13, 2011, by Louisa VeidelisIt was announced today that the unemployment rate has dropped to 5.7 per cent, reflecting Australias continuing path to recovery from the international recession. The improvement came as a surprise after financial markets and economists had predicted the rate would increase to 6 per cent. Unemployment remained steady at 5.8 per cent from July to September. The issue of underemployment also appears to be improving as 35 400 of the 40 600 jobs created in September were full-time positions.Ben Potter, a research analyst from IG Markets, believes that the statistics released today could mean that weve seen the end of high unemployment for now.The creation of 40 000 jobs against forecast losses of 10 000, and the unemployment rate falling to 5.7 per cent, would certainly seem to suggest we have seen peak unemployment, particularly given the positiv e reads from recent forward looking indicators, Potter told the ABC yesterday. However, the Treasury is concerned that these gains could be prematurely curtailed if the Governments future stimulus spending is cancelled. Treasury Secretary Ken Henry warned that a further 100 000 jobs could be lost if the Governments planned stimulus spending was scrapped. What does this mean for you? While were not in the clear yet, the emerging strong labour market means that cautious optimism is in order. Pros and Cons of Taking a Seasonal Job

Heres how to decide if one is right for you. This time of year theres a whole new crop of jobs that pop up. As we careen past summer and head down the home stretch to the holiday season, there are a lot of retailers and other businesses that need a few extra hands to help them handle all of the extra traffic.Whether youre looking for a part time job, a full-time career or just need a little money on the side, seasonal jobs are an interesting option. During the autumn there are a lot of seasonal jobs that pop up for the holiday retail season, but they are far from the only positions out there.Besides retail help during the holidays, you could find work at a resort during the tourist season (think skiing or camping), picking berries or other produce during harvest, or even doing some basic taxes during the tax season (with a little training). You could work with kids at summer camps or help out at a local festival. There are seasonal jobs to fit just about any season and any talent level. But heres the question are they worth it? Before you brush up your resume and fill out that application, here are a few pros and cons to keep in mind.Pro You can build your resume. If you can find a seasonal position that features work that will help fill a gap on your resume, then by all means go for it For instance, lets say you are looking for work as a retail manager, but you dont have a lot of front-end/register experience. Then, you see a position open as a cashier/supervisor at a local store open for the holiday season. Two or three months working behind the counter and possibly in the cash office could fill that hole in your resume and prepare you for the next step in your career. Just make sure that youre thoughtful in how you present your seasonal job on your resume to get the most out of it.Con Low Pay .Because most seasonal jobs dont require much previous knowledge or special training, they also tend to be low-paying jobs. By low-paying, I mean minimum wage or close to it. If youre currently out of work, there isnt a lot of downside here. At least its paying work. Or if youre looking for a little extra spending cash for the holidays or to save up for a trip, it could also be a good move. If youre careful in your job search, you may even find a decent paying seasonal job, but there arent many. However, if youre working on your career and thinking about something that can take you to the next step, you might need to consider whether or bedrngnis the extra hours and will be worth it. Do you have a family who needs some of your time? Does your day job exhaust you already? Taking on a seasonal job at minimal pay if you think you have a shot at better paying jobs may not be your best move.Pro Get a foot in the door.Perhaps the money isnt your biggest objective. If you know of a company that you really respect, but just havent been able to get your foot in the door there, seasonal jobs could be just the opportunity youre looking for. If you can work for a few months and really show them what you have to offer, theres a good weg that they wont want to let you go when that seasonal gig is up. You cant assume youll get hired on full-time, but at least youll have an opportunity to show them what youve got.Con Little (if any) training.Dont expect to get hired on for a seasonal job and get some really good, detailed training before you get to work. Due to the short nature of the season (whatever season it may be) and the need to get things done quickly, you can expect to get a quick how-to speech and then be thrown into the fray. Dont take a job at a bookstore expecting to learn all of the ins and outs of book retailing. Youre there to help customers and ring them up. The end.For this reason, its best to choose a seasonal job where you already have some rudimentary knowl edge. If your goal is to learn more about the business, you may have to take it upon yourself to learn as much as you can on the fly.Pro Beats a gap on your resume. If youre facing a period of unemployment, you may think that a seasonal job isnt going to pay you enough to make it worthwhile. Is it below your professional level? Probably. The hard truth is, a gap on your resume raises eyebrows when prospective employers are looking at your work history. What did you do for those three months? While there are ways to handle a gap in your resume, it may be better to just avoid having one.If you can take a seasonal job, theres always a way to spin it as a learning experience and talk about what skills you developed over that time. Even if thats not the case, it presents you as a person who is not content to just sit around. Youre a hard worker.Con Schedule. The low pay can be a deal breaker, but if thats not bad enough, youll probably be working a tough schedule. Holiday retail seasonal h elp as well as tourist-based jobs tend to be heaviest on evenings and weekends. That means if youre already working full-time, youre giving up a lot of the free time you did have. If youre not working full-time, youll end up working when you least want to.If youre looking at an agricultural or production-based seasonal job, you may be working evenings and weekends as well as days and maybe some nights. These jobs are in a crunch to get as much work done as possible, so you may be looking at heavy hours. At least there may be overtime involved.Conclusion.Any way you look at it, seasonal jobs are opportunities. The key is figuring out if there is a position that matches what you would need out of it to make it worthwhile. Consider the pay, the hours, what you could learn, and the company involved. Make your own pro and con list and figure out if that job is worth the sacrifices you may have to make to take it. The best case scenario would be that it sets you up for a better job with t hat company or another. The worst case would mean that your miserable for just a few months. Its your choice, but hurry, those seasonal jobs wont last long.Need help with your resume? Take advantage of our free critique today

The Long-Term Unemployed Quality Candidates in Disguise
The Long-Term Unemployed Quality Candidates in Disguise The Long-Term Unemployed Quality Candidates in Disguise Some employers intentionally or unwittingly discriminate against the long-term unemployed, defined as those who have not worked for more than six months. A study out of Northeastern University using fake resumes found that âemployers would rather call back someone with no relevant experience whos only been out of work for a few months than someone with more relevant experience whos been out of work for longer than six months.â Why? Reasons vary from organization to organization. One employer interviewed by AOL said itâs difficult to tell how someone lost their job, and he believes that people with jobs are more valuable, adjust quicker and have fresher skills. But is that true? Not according to the data. Research from Evolv says that among hourly employees, employment history has no correlation with performance or tenure. In other words, itâs misleading to think the long-term unemployed are unemployed by choice or have less to offer. Here are some reasons you should give the long-term unemployed a chance: You canât judge a candidate solely by an employment gap Employment history counts. But be aware of popular assumptions, such as that the long-term unemployed have fewer skills, are undesirable candidates or have been unemployed for so long theyâve lost their appeal. If you donât at least screen them, you will never know. You can help yourself by helping the unemployed Many unemployed workers are in need and will appreciate the opportunity. CEO of Business Talent Group states that you can expect someone who is the right fit to be motivated to perform well and be less likely to leave. Bonus: An employer that gives equal opportunity to candidates will stand out in the industry. You are missing out on quality candidates You could be overlooking good candidates by screening for employment history. Long-term unemployed job seekers make up 37 percent of unemployed individuals. If you choose to ignore these candidates, youâre missing out on a lot of talent. 3 Tips to Better Evaluate the Unemployed 1. When looking at resumes Aside from their resume, dig deeper by reading the cover letter and looking for clues to the source of unemployment as well as their breadth of experience. Did they work for Fortune 500 companies? Or a start-up? Itâs is an indicator of the value of their experience. 2. When screening candidates and during the interview Evaluate their out-of-work activities. Did your candidate sit around in a slump? Or did they pursue training and new skills? The best candidates show initiative. You want to measure their value and extract how itâs beneficial to your business. 3. When talking to hiring managers When trying to sell any candidate to a hiring manager, focus on skills and fit. Itâs no different for a long-term unemployed candidate. Treat them like any other, and emphasize their strengths. Donât dwell on their employment status with the hiring manager. Bottom-line: Donât get distracted by the long-term unemployment label. It takes one phone call to screen a potential candidate. Employment status shouldnât rule a potential hire out if you think the candidate might be a good fit. 9 signs youre dealing with an emotional manipulator
9 signs youâre dealing with an emotional manipulator 9 signs youâre dealing with an emotional manipulator We all know what it feels like to be emotionally manipulated. It can be extremely effective, which is why some unscrupulous individuals do it so much.A few years ago, Facebook, in conjunction with researchers from Cornell and the University of California, conducted an experiment in which they intentionally played with the emotions of 689,000 users by manipulating their feeds so that some users only saw negative stories while others only saw positive stories. Sure enough, when these people posted their own updates, they were greatly influenced by the mood of the posts theyâd been shown.Facebook caught a lot of flak over the experiment, primarily because none of the âparticipantsâ gave their consent to join the study. Perhaps more frightening than Facebookâs faux pas was just how easily peopleâs emotions were manipulated. After all, if Facebook can manipulate your emotions just by tweaking your newsfeed, imagine how much easier this is for a real, live person who knows your w eaknesses and triggers. A skilled emotional manipulator can destroy your self-esteem and even make you question your sanity.Itâs precisely because emotional manipulation can be so destructive that itâs important for you to recognize it in your own life. Itâs not as easy as you might think, because emotional manipulators are typically very skillful. They start out with subtle manipulation and raise the stakes over time, so slowly that you donât even realize itâs happening. Fortunately, emotional manipulators are easy enough to spot if you know what to look for. They undermine your faith in your grasp of reality.Emotional manipulators are incredibly skilled liars. They insist an incident didnât happen when it did, and they insist they did or said something when they didnât. The trouble is theyâre so good at it that you end up questioning your own sanity. To insist that whatever caused the problem is a figment of your imagination is an extremely powerful way of getting o ut of trouble.Their actions donât match their words.Emotional manipulators will tell you what you want to hear, but their actions are another story. They pledge their support, but, when it comes time to follow through, they act as though your requests are entirely unreasonable. They tell you how lucky they are to know you, and then act as though youâre a burden. This is just another way of undermining your belief in your own sanity. They make you question reality as you see it and mold your perception according to what is convenient to them. They are experts at doling out guilt.Emotional manipulators are masters at leveraging your guilt to their advantage. If you bring up something thatâs bothering you, they make you feel guilty for mentioning it. If you donât, they make you feel guilty for keeping it to yourself and stewing on it. When youâre dealing with emotional manipulators, whatever you do is wrong, and, no matter what problems the two of you are having, theyâre you r fault. They claim the role of the victim. When it comes to emotional manipulators, nothing is ever their fault. No matter what they do - or fail to do - itâs someone elseâs fault. Someone else made them do it - and, usually, itâs you. If you get mad or upset, itâs your fault for having unreasonable expectations; if they get mad, itâs your fault for upsetting them. Emotional manipulators donât take accountability for anything. They are too much, too soon.Whether itâs a personal relationship or a business relationship, emotional manipulators always seem to skip a few steps. They share too much too soon- and expect the same from you. They portray vulnerability and sensitivity, but itâs a ruse. The charade is intended to make you feel âspecialâ for being let into their inner circle, but itâs also intended to make you feel not just sorry for them but also responsible for their feelings. They are an emotional black hole.Whatever emotional manipulators are feeling, t heyâre geniuses at sucking everyone around them into those emotions. If theyâre in a bad mood, everyone around them knows it. But thatâs not the worst part: theyâre so skillful that, not only is everyone aware of their mood, they feel it too. This creates a tendency for people to feel responsible for the manipulatorâs moods and obliged to fix them. They eagerly agree to help - and maybe even volunteer - then act like a martyr. An initial eagerness to help swiftly morphs into sighs, groans, and suggestions that whatever they agreed to do is a huge burden. And, if you shine a spotlight on that reluctance, theyâll turn it around on you, assuring you that, of course, they want to help and that youâre just being paranoid. The goal? To make you feel guilty, indebted, and maybe even crazy. They always one-up you.No matter what problems you may have, emotional manipulators have it worse. They undermine the legitimacy of your complaints by reminding you that their problems are m ore serious. The message? You have no reason to complain, so shut the heck up.They know all your buttons and donât hesitate to push them.Emotional manipulators know your weak spots, and theyâre quick to use that knowledge against you. If youâre insecure about your weight, they comment on what you eat or the way your clothes fit; if youâre worried about an upcoming presentation, they point out how intimidating and judgmental the attendees are. Their awareness of your emotions is off the charts, but they use it to manipulate you, not to make you feel better.- - - Overcoming manipulationEmotional manipulators drive you crazy because their behavior is so irrational. Make no mistake about it- their behavior truly goes against reason, so why do you allow yourself to respond to them emotionally and get sucked into the mix?The more irrational and off-base someone is, the easier it should be for you to remove yourself from their traps. Quit trying to beat them at their own game. Di stance yourself from them emotionally, and approach your interactions with them like theyâre a science project (or youâre their shrink if you prefer that analogy). You donât need to respond to the emotional chaos- only the facts.Maintaining an emotional distance requires awareness. You canât stop someone from pushing your buttons if you donât recognize when itâs happening. Sometimes youâll find yourself in situations where youâll need to regroup and choose the best way forward. This is fine, and you shouldnât be afraid to buy yourself some time to do so.Most people feel as though because they work or live with someone, they have no way to control the chaos. This couldnât be further from the truth. Once youâve identified a manipulator, youâll begin to find their behavior more predictable and easier to understand. This will equip you to think rationally about when and where you have to put up with them and when and where you donât. You can establish boundarie s, but youâll have to do so consciously and proactively. If you let things happen naturally, youâre bound to find yourself constantly embroiled in difficult conversations. If you set boundaries and decide when and where youâll engage a difficult person, you can control much of the chaos. The only trick is to stick to your guns and keep boundaries in place when the person tries to cross them, which they will.Bringing it all togetherEmotional manipulators can undermine your sense of who you are and even make you doubt your own sanity. Remember: nobody can manipulate you without your consent and cooperation. What are some other signs of emotional manipulation? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.Travis Bradberry is the co-author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and the cofounder of TalentSmart. This column first appeared on LinkedIn.

How to Plan Stress-Free Vacations From Work - The Muse
How to Plan Stress-Free Vacations From Work - The Muse How to Plan Stress-Free Vacations From Work Lest you think this is an article about how to find cheap airfare to Hawaii or how to get that five-star hotel at a two-star price, let me be clear: I have no tips on these covetable items. I do, however, have some handy advice for how to plan a less stressful vacation. And, no, Iâm not going to tell you to practice yoga or pack in advance or get to the airport early (though none of those things are bad ideas). Rather, Iâd like to encourage you to consider the ways that advance planning can allow you more freedom to truly unplug from work and get the recharge you need, thereby making your time off the best it can be. Admittedly, Iâm one of those people who likes to plan. (I may or may not have my vacations semi-planned through the beginning of 2019.) Because of my planning instincts, Iâve always requested PTO as far in advance as possible and was surprised recently when a close friend told me on a Monday that sheâd decided to take Friday off because she wanted to go on a road trip. âAnd your boss was fine with that?â Iâd asked incredulously. âYeah, I have plenty of days left,â she answered as though it were no big deal. She might have the unused vacation days, and, granted, she wasnât giving her manager four daysâ notice for time off of any significant length, but it still seemed terribly last-minute to me. So it was no surprise that a survey from Office Team revealed the finding that in summer months 32% of people are guilty of ânot planning well for vacations.â For what itâs worth, 22% of employees had âunexplained absences,â which suggests the possibility that a long weekend away was decided on the spur of the moment, making the employee suddenly, unexpectedly absent. These were both- understandably so- deemed pejorative behaviors. Which is why you should ask your boss for time off the right way. The courtesy of a proper heads up- whether youâre taking three days or two weeks off. Not only will they appreciate it, but youâll no doubt reap the benefits too. Then- here comes my trick- youâre going to want to do a reverse countdown, like the one I created before my honeymoon last summer. To help you do that, Iâve created this simple worksheet for you to fill out. Itâs hard to get ahead if you leave things to the last possible minute. Not to mention, knowing you have time off planned in two months gives you a chance to think of the coming weeks, dispersing a little work here and a little work there, rather than attempting to squeeze it all into a small window. And while it might be unrealistic for you to get everything done before you leave, my guess is that your supervisorâs likely to be a lot more amenable to helping you take stress-free time off if youâve been thoughtful about what taking that time will mean for your team. (For example, sharing this completed worksheet when you request your time off.) If taking a stress-free vacation is as easy as spending 15 to 30 minutes coming up with a plan- and I think it is- you can ensure that youâre not engaging in one of the âmost common negative employee behaviors at this time of year.â After all, why spend your summer sitting in the office or stressing when youâre out of it when you can avoid both?

11 Things Your Employees Are Not Sharing With You
11 Things Your Employees Are Not Sharing With You 11 Things Your Employees Are Not Sharing With You When you are a manager, the old saying âno news is good newsâ doesnât always apply. While it may be tempting to bury your head in the sand (or keep your door closed) and assume that all is well with your employees because no one is complaining, thatâs a bad assumption. There may be another reason no one is bringing any issues to you â" they may not trust you. Do you have one of those âNo Whining!â signs in your office? If so, whatâs that really telling your employees? To everyone but you, it says: Just do your job and keep your mouth shut. In the absence of a solid foundation of trust and open two-way communication, here are eleven things youâre not going to hear from your employees: 1. Iâm looking for a new job. It should never come as a surprise when an employee hands you their two-week notice. Once that happens, itâs too late to counter-offer to retain the employee. There was a reason (or reasons) the employee started looking for a new position. The key to retaining your best employees is being able to uncover those little sources of dissatisfaction before they turn into BIG sources of dissatisfaction and you find yourself in an exit interview wondering where you went wrong. 2. Iâm not really busy and could take on a lot more work. Not too many employees are going to ask their managers for more work. Most people will find things to do to fill up their days. As a manager, itâs up to you to make sure your employees are challenged, productive, and engaged in high priority, value-added work. 3. You really are terrible at ______. Everybody has weaknesses â" and blind spots â" and itâs risky for employees to be the one to point them out to their manager. Asking for feedback helps, and more importantly, responding in a non-defensive way will open up the door for your employees to help you become aware of your blind spots. 4. You show favorites. Are you âfriendsâ with some of your employees and not others? You may think your relationships with certain employees outside of work is not having an impact on how you treat them, but chances are itâs creating a perception that is impacting your relationships. 5. We wish you would leave so we can relax and let our hair down. Yes, itâs OK to join your crew for a drink after work. However, itâs important to face the fact that you are the boss, and all employees will vent about their managers, even the best managers. When it comes to socializing, follow the âbuy one round and outâ rule of thumb. 6. You donât have a clue about what I do and donât seem to care. While no employee wants to work for a micromanager, they do expect their boss to have a good understanding of what they do. More importantly, they want to know that their work is important and appreciated. 7. My co-worker is getting away with murder and you donât seem to have a clue. No one likes to tattle on their coworkers. They would rather that their manager is astute enough to know who is pulling their weight and who is not. 8. Hello, Iâm trying to talk to you and youâre not paying attention. Are you giving your employees 100% of your attention? Are you in the moment? Or, are you checking emails, multi-tasking, or daydreaming about something else? Your employees deserve your undivided attention and feel disrespected when they donât think they are getting it. 9. Youâre not as funny as you think you are. Hereâs a harsh management reality: just because your employees laugh at your attempts at humor doesnât mean youâre funny. Get over yourself â" thatâs just what we do around our bosses. 10. I really donât like you. Most managers really want to be liked by their employees, but wanting to be âlikedâ is an unrealistic and inappropriate goal as a leader. Leadership isnât a popularity contest; itâs more important to be respected. 11. I have some great ideas on how to improve things around here but you dont seem to want to hear them. Do you get defensive when an employee offers an idea on how to improve something? Do you respond with we tried that and it didnt work, or thats not how we do things around here? If you do that often enough, youll soon stop getting those suggestions and youll wonder why your employees are not being more innovative. The Bottom Line While there will always be employee thoughts that better remain unspoken, just be careful that you are not inadvertently shutting down healthy, constructive, open, two-way communication. What you are not hearing might be harmful to your managerial health. Updated by Art Petty.

A Guide to Career as a Livestock Auctioneer
A Guide to Career as a Livestock Auctioneer A Guide to Career as a Livestock Auctioneer Livestock auctioneers stand on the auction block in the sales ring, facing the bidders in the audience. They point out any particularly desirable qualities that an individual animal may have, and they mention general information like pedigree, age, and breeder. They begin to chant the asking price, raising the bids in regular increments as they look around the sales area and receive bids from interested parties. Spotting bids, either directly from the crowd or through signals from professional bid spotters (a.k.a. ringmen), is a critical part of this job since bidders may give very subtle signals that they wish to raise their bids. At the conclusion of the bidding, the auctioneer bangs the gavel and declares an animal sold. Additional duties for a livestock auctioneer include assigning lot numbers to animals, tagging or marking animals for identification in the sale ring, and completing a variety of administrative tasks in the office to ensure that all paperwork and health records are for the animals being presented. Livestock auctioneers must have a strong sense of ethics, be able to control the crowd, and maintain their focus in an often chaotic environment. Education Training Livestock auctioneers must be licensed if their state mandates it. More than half of states in the U.S. require livestock auctioneers to be licensed, and some of those states have continuing education requirements for maintaining a valid license. To apply for a license, a candidate must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or the equivalent, and pass a criminal background check. The licensing process usually involves passing an exam, paying a licensing fee, and securing a surety bond. Most aspiring auctioneers either attend an auctioneering school or take an apprenticeship with an established auctioneer to learn the ropes. Auctioneering school programs can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to complete. These schools teach auction chanting, public speaking, marketing, legal considerations, and ethics. They also have students participate in practice drills to simulate the auction experience. Other candidates forgo the school route and gain experience as an apprentice auctioneer, working under the supervision and guidance of an experienced professional. The National Auctioneers Association (NAA) is a professional membership group that offers a variety of certification programs including the prestigious Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) designation. The CAI certification process occurs over a three-year period, with auctioneers participating in a week of intensive training each March. Continuing education credits are required to maintain the CAI designation. Livestock auctioneers often participate in competitive events to keep their skills sharp and test their abilities against other professionals. Auctioneers may begin at local and regional competitions and work their way up to larger events. The Livestock Marketing Association hosts the annual World Livestock Auctioneer Championship, one of the best-known competitive auctioneering events. Salary The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not collect information on auctioneers in its salary surveys, but the National Auctioneers Association reports that salary can vary widely due to the commission-based nature of compensation. Auctioneers can expect to earn a 10 to 15 percent commission on their sales, plus bonuses in some cases. Pay can, therefore, vary widely based on the number of auctions worked, the volume and dollar amount of sales, the geographic location where the auction is held, and the auctioneerâs reputation and experience. Career Options Livestock auctioneers may specialize in working with one particular type of animal (cattle, sheep, pigs) or work with a variety of livestock species. Some livestock auctioneers have additional areas of expertise such as hosting auctions for real estate, automobiles, or personal property. They may also go on to become livestock appraisers.

Getting laid off was the best financial motivator (and it can be for you too)
Getting laid off was the best financial motivator (and it can be for you too) Getting laid off was the best financial motivator (and it can be for you too) Inevitably, at some point in your professional career, you may end up getting laid off. Most times, itâs not based on your work ethic or performance at all. It just happens due to tough economic times, poor leadership, business is falling behind, etc.Being laid off can hit you like a shockwave and make you feel a mix of emotions too. You may feel angry, upset, stressed, or maybe in disbelief. And it is completely normal to have these feelings.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! But instead of feeling down about yourself, this can also be a golden, âkick-in-the-assâ you need.By this, I mean it can be the ultimate career and personal finance motivator that you may have needed (or maybe didnât realize you needed). If you have been laid off or fear you might, I hope my story and some thoughts behind it will encourage you to look at something negative like job loss, as a po tential revolutionary moment in your life for your future career and finances.Getting Laid OffNot everyone is or wants to be an entrepreneur, so the majority of people will enter the workforce in some capacity. Could be for a major business, maybe a local company, or even a startup. Unfortunately, this also increases the odds that you might be laid off one day.Iâve been fortunate that Iâve only experienced a lay off once in my professional career (so far), but it was a shock and certainly a bit of panic set in.I worked for a pretty well-known publishing brand that owned some big magazines and also was the publisher of many books. And this was also my first job after graduating college in 2010.The position was nothing fancy, but was my first real gig in the proverbial âcube farmâ and corporate world. However, during the four years I was there, the company was known to do incremental layoffs. This, of course, created a culture of fear and worry (hats off to great leadership practices, **rolls eyes**).Money magazine reports 61% of people have lost a job for longer than a year by the time they reach age 70.And here begins my lay off storyâ¦In August 2014, I was talking with a good friend about how dissatisfied I was with my career and how I felt like my professional career did not have a clear path.I also felt financially stuck and wanted to figure out how to make more money and not be stressed about being broke, etc. That was me edging toward my own breaking point, but I didnât know where to start. So I began learning more about personal finance, investing, and took on a side gig doing some web work for an extra month. Then at the beginning of December, just about three weeks before Christmas 2014, I was laid off. There were already rumors of the last round of layoffs having passed, so I felt safe at this point. And then the ultimate lump of coal, another round of layoffs, which I was included in.After the dreaded sit down with my manager and some HR rep, it was all a blur. But in an odd way at that moment, stress and panic did not set in.I was almost euphoric, giddy, and excited that this happened because I was just sick of the company and the work. But, later that day, everything hit me. A flood of various negative emotions, stress, and worry about what I was going to do.I didnât have much saved, I was living on my own with bills and student loans to pay. Fortunately, I did get severance pay that would last me until February, but after that, I needed a way to make money.I would not find a new full-time gig for almost 9 months! I stayed a float with that side gig I mentioned earlier and got another part-time gig with a startup. However, I like to call my layoff a divine intervention in both career and my personal finances, hereâs why.The divine career interventionThe reason I call my layoff a âdivine career interventionâ, was because I had no defined career or path.I started in email marketing for the company I wa s laid off from, then did some graphic stuff, then went to photo management and some mobile app building. My resume was just a bunch of randomness and I only worked in one place. But this forced me to learn what I liked, focusing on fixing my career path (I pivoted to digital marketing), and improve my career worth. But getting laid off was also a financial motivator too.The divine financial interventionI never want to experience the panic or stress of not knowing how Iâm going to pay bills or be solely dependent on a job.Until getting laid off, I never actually put much thought into that. I wasnât concerned or really had a plan in place if something would happen.I was starting to think about this a few months before I was let go from my job, which I think was crucial in being a bit more prepared to get learning. But getting laid shifted my entire financial mindset too. Fear was certainly a motivating factor, but bettering my future was also a driving force. The way I thought a bout money, like saving, spending, and investing was more on my mind than ever before. Why Getting Laid Off Can Be the Motivation You NeedAt the time it wonât feel like it or might be hard to envision how, but I truly believe it can (and does) if you approach it with a clear mentality.Of course, the stress of money and paying your bills is a big reason to be worried. But Iâm a firm believer that the hard times in life are the best lessons and times to take action.A moment of grief and emotions is certainly healthy, take a few days for yourself to process and come to terms. But pick yourself up and get to work! Here are a few ways getting laid off was the motivator I needed and these may also apply to you if you face a layoff.Forces you out of your comfort zoneBeing laid off is an uncomfortable situation, but it forced me to take action and avoid future complacency. Although a bit scary because of the unknown, I think it helped me be better prepared for situations that might no t always be sunshine and rainbows.Talking about careers, finding a job, learning how to manage my finances during this time, wasnât exactly comfortable topics. But, getting laid off did not leave me much choice but to jump right in.Can teach you how to be more prepared financiallyNot having much cash saved, with debt and bills to pay during a layoff was quite stressful. But it put me in a survival mode, which helped me approach finances differently.I started to understand the value of emergency funds, helped me become a better budgeter, and a better saver too.It teaches you how to truly manage your money more effectively, which can stick with you well beyond your layoff period.Increases the value of multiple income streams and side hustlesYouâve probably heard about the value of multiple streams of income, but not everyone has one outside of their day job. Being laid off can really prove the value of having another source of income through a side hustle. When you have another source or two outside of your 9-5, you have a financial buffer and you will probably feel a bit less stressed if a layoff happens.Getting laid off will potentially make you care more about multiple streams of income, work harder on side hustles, or fuel you to work more on your own projects. Since this happened to me, I always ensure I had 1-2 extra streams of income.Helps you appreciate more of what you do haveBeing laid off is a sucky situation and can feel like your world is falling apart. But, I also found it to be a great reflection period to appreciate what you do have in life. Look for the positives, even when you feel the negative energy around you.For me, I still had a place to live, had a supportive family, great relationship had started, and I had a side hustle that could help me make some money to stay afloat. So while I was nervous about losing my job and having no clear career direction, I found my mentality to become positive about the situation after some reflecti on.Final ThoughtsEveryone handles being laid off differently and your financial situation when this happens is also unique. But take this time to remove the negative energy and work on how this can actually better your life.My best tips for helping you analyze your lay off situation is to do the following: Take some time for yourself to gather thoughts and emotions. Take a day or two, or if you need a bit longer. Mental and emotional health will be crucial to creating a plan of action and help drive your attitude. Find things that are calming and fuel your mind with good energy. If you are low on funds and need to make money, look for part-time or a job that might not be in your career to get a steady paycheck. Apply for unemployment immediately, take odd side jobs for now, however you can legally make money. If you do have a bit of a financial buffer, put it to good use and work on your personal finances to ensure you arenât overspending while looking for your next gig. Evaluate your career, what you like, dislike, and do some research to make changes if you think you need a new path. Itâs not always easy to switch careers or find something you are passionate about immediately, but spend time in this area. The internet can teach you plenty and has a lot of great resources for you to research. Put a plan together, whether thatâs giving your resume a boost, improving your knowledge (books, certifications, training, etc.) networking, finding a new career path, organizing your finances, or all the above. Write down your career and financial goals, figure out how you are going to get there. Talk to friends, colleagues, or family if you need some advice or help. Has getting laid off motivated you or have you thought about what youâd do in this situation? Let me know in the comments below. This article first appeared on Invested Wallet.
